Wolf Rain – Nalini Singh

As always it was wonderful visiting my favorite pack. I have a weakness for wolf shifters, and when I found out about the title and the blurb I was ecstatic.

After so many books in this series, the cast of characters has become huge, and it becomes harder and harder with each book to remember them all. More often I don’t remember their individual stories anymore, but it’s always heartwarming to see them live and prosper in harmony.

But unfortunately for me, it’s becoming more and more a case of storylines and couples blending into one another. And to a certain point the originality is wearing off. But that doesn’t mean that the author doesn’t deliver solid and engrossing tales, they just aren’t as distinguishably as they once were. At least that’s the case for me. I have never been a fan of LONG series. The longest series I read and loved are Kate Daniels, The Others, Dresden Files, the Prey,  Fatal and the In Death series, and every single one is about one continuous couple or character. I like it when the cast stays the same with some additions here and there  – but the main core is always the same.

Now, let’s get back to Wolf Rain…

What stood out for me was Memory, even though she was kidnapped for many year, she didn’t lose her feistiness or sass. She was a female character I adored for her strong will, endurance and strength to know what she wanted even if it seemed to make no sense. She was one of those characters whose personality spoke to me immediately. And she meshed beautifully with her growly wolf.

Alexei was a typical wolf, approachable, protective, and always knew how to handle Memory. He was tuned into her to a fantastic degree and made them incredibly compatible as a couple.

I really enjoyed Memory and Alexei together. Smart and funny dialogues had me laughing out loud. And their chemistry was palpable. Even though Memory was inexperienced she had no trouble distinguishing her feelings and because of that she was steps ahead of Alexei. Him catching up was endearing and a source of continuous amusement.

As always the author had many new dangers lurking around corners. Forces that threatened the overall survival of Psy and PsyNet. The overall story arc is still moving along, it might have taken a little breather in Wolf Rain, but there is definitley movement. And of course I’m wondering what’s coming next. At this point I wouldn’t mind for favorite couples to get another book. Krycheck for example is just too interesting for him not have a second book. Because his power is truly one of a kind.

Throughout Wolf Rain the author revisits old and popular characters, and gives the reader small glimpses into their present lives. These glimpses are somewhat satisfying but might make this book not the ideal book to start this series with. There are just too many characters that are being mentioned. So start with book one and enjoy the ride.

Wolf Rain – Nalini Singh

Wolf Rain - Nalini SinghKidnapped as a young girl, her psychic powers harnessed by a madman, Memory lives a caged and isolated existence…until she comes face-to-face with a wolf. Labelled an empath by her bad-tempered rescuer, Memory knows that her ‘gift’ is nothing so bright. It is a terrible darkness that means she will always be hunted.

But Memory is free now and she intends to live. A certain growly wolf can just deal with it.

Alexei prefers to keep his packmates at bay, the bleak history of his family a constant reminder that mating, love, hope is not for him. But Memory, this defiant and fearless woman who stands toe-to-toe with him awakens the most primal part of his nature–and soon, he must make a choice: risk everything or lose Memory to a murderous darkness that wants to annihilate her from existence…

I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There’s no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. lI also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.
