CORINA’S REVIEW

I loved the idea of the book, not so much the execution.

If you obsess about rom-coms as much as Annie, the heroine does, this book might be the right one for you. She lives and breathes rom-coms, and wants her life to be one. She actually thinks she is living the life of a rom-com heroine, just waiting to ran into her own “Tom Hanks”.

That’s where the issues are piling up.

Besides the book being overly predictable, the amount of movie comparisons and references are staggering. Annie’s unhealthy fixation with rom-coms is an overkill on the author’s part and becomes quickly tiring. I could only take so much of her thought process before it became repeatable and annoying.

It’s never a good sign when the supporting characters outshine the heroine. Annie was not easily likable, and that’s mostly because of her thought process, and the way she treated Drew.

It’s hard to connect to someone that is fixated onto the idea that her live must play out like a rom-com. That’s just not normal. And it gets only worse when she lets that thought process rule her entire life and affect everything and everyone around her. Besides that Annie came across as childish and immature – and that’s never a good trait in a heroine.

The author tried for a sweet romantic comedy, but somewhere along the way her heroine took over and made it all about her.

BLURB

Waiting for Tom Hanks - Kerry WinfreyCan a romcom-obssessed romantic finally experience the meet-cute she always dreamed of or will reality never compare to fiction, in this charming debut adult novel from Kerry Winfrey.

Annie is twenty-seven years old, single, and obsessed with romantic comedies (she and her mother watched them religiously, before her mom died). Her dating life is limited by the expectations she’s formed from these movies. She is not as open to new experiences as she might be, because she’s waiting for her Tom Hanks–i.e., a guy she’ll find in the perfect, meet-cute romantic comedy way. When Annie does finally meet her perfect match, it’s not quite in the way she expected, and she’s forced to reckon with the walls she’s built around herself over the years.
