Serious Moonlight – Jenn Bennett

Serious Moonlight was my first book by this author. After always hearing amazing things about her books, I finally had the opportunity to read one.

I love contemporary YA way more than YA fantasy. The reason is simple. It usually comes with less drama, which I appreciate, and which was the case with Serious Moonlight.

I also really enjoyed the mystery arc that was part of the story. It wasn’t a blown out mystery, not enough suspense for my taste, but it gave the story another layer. And seeing Birdie and Daniel talking about Nick and Nora from Thin Man made me smile like crazy.

Further, I thought Birdie’s struggle with narcolepsy, a sleeping disorder, was fascinating. That’s a disease I never even heard of, and it again gave the entire story a unique twist brought more character to the plot.

Overall, I really enjoyed the writing, and the characters. Especially Birdie and Daniel, but also Aunt Mona and in some way Birdie’s grandfather. They all were extremely likable, well developed and approachable.

For me it was mostly the length of the book that I struggled with. I felt the story could have been wrapped up way quicker, and it still would have been a very satisfying novel. But midway through it started to drag for me, and not even my adoration for the characters helped much. I thought Birdie and Daniel were adorable. Extremely sweet, that’s actually how the entire story felt. Sweet, charming and heartwarming. It just was way too long.

ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review.

Serious Moonlight – Jenn Bennett

Serious Moonlight - Jenn BennettAfter an awkward first encounter, Birdie and Daniel are forced to work together in a Seattle hotel where a famous author leads a mysterious and secluded life in this romantic contemporary novel from the author of Alex, Approximately.

Mystery-book aficionado Birdie Lindberg has an overactive imagination. Raised in isolation and homeschooled by strict grandparents, she’s cultivated a whimsical fantasy life in which she plays the heroic detective and every stranger is a suspect. But her solitary world expands when she takes a job the summer before college, working the graveyard shift at a historic Seattle hotel.

In her new job, Birdie hopes to blossom from introverted dreamer to brave pioneer, and gregarious Daniel Aoki volunteers to be her guide. The hotel’s charismatic young van driver shares the same nocturnal shift and patronizes the waterfront Moonlight Diner where she waits for the early morning ferry after work. Daniel also shares her appetite for intrigue, and he’s stumbled upon a real-life mystery: a famous reclusive writer—never before seen in public—might be secretly meeting someone at the hotel.

To uncover the writer’s puzzling identity, Birdie must come out of her shell…discovering that most confounding mystery of all may be her growing feelings for the elusive riddle that is Daniel.

  1. I read Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett and I absolutely loved it. I’m kind of scared not liking Serious Moonlight. I hope I won’t be disappointed by it. I hope you’ll try to read Alex, Approximately!

    1. I actually have Alex, Approximately on my shelf. I don’t expect that you won’t like it. She might just be not a writer that wows me. And since you loved Alex, I’m pretty sure you’ll love this one too.
