CORINA’S REVIEW

So, here we are, almost an entire month after publication. Even though when I first read the blurb of RECOVERED I knew I wanted to read it, I didn’t pick it up immediately. It didn’t matter that I bought the book on release day. I didn’t touch it. And I actually forgot all about it and didn’t even remember that I bought it. I borrowed it from the library – that’s how far I pushed this book to the back of my mind. It all came down that I was nervous.

You might ask why, I’ll tell you.

The book is based on RL. On the authors own relationship with a former boyfriend. On top of it, the story is gritty, and raw. Additionally in Real Life the relationship did not end in a happily ever after. So, that pretty much sums it up. I need a HEA, and I was scared I wouldn’t get one.

So, last week I finally picked it up.

I was in one of those epic book slumps. And after multiple DNF’s I finally didn’t care anymore. I needed something to get me out of this funk. And then the most amazing thing happened – I was immediately sucked into the plot, undeniably in love with the characters and absolutely and utterly captivated by the story.

RECOVERED was one of those books that forced it’s way into my heart and never left. From beginning to end I was all in. There was nothing else I wanted to do except for reading this awesome and brutally realistic love-story.

RECOVERED is about people that struggle, fail, and pick themselves up again. Some might never really recover, or be healed, others have a reason to try their best. And many will struggle each day of their life, some more than others.

RECOVERED is a true and touching love-story. A kind of opposites attract trope, with two awesome characters that are very dear to me. Affton (what a cool name) and Cable were meant for each other. Their relationship started from afar until they were forced to spent a summer together, as sober companion and client. Both heartwarmingly reluctant in their positions, found their way to each other in slow and measured steps. The sexual tension, sometimes could have been cut with a knife, made my heart flutter with excitement.

Seriously, my heart fluttered all the time while reading this novel. This book struck a nerve, spoke to me and was just all kinds of amazing.

Most amazing of all was the relationship between Affton and Cable. Affton was unequivocally honest, straightforward, ballsy, and brave. She was Cable’s anchor. She gave him peace, quiet, and was the only reason for him, for a long time, to really work on his recovery. Even though they had different goals in life, their love for each other was strong, deep and persistent. Neither was very emotional, which made sense since their personalities were forged by their environment and families. But Affton and Cable found in each other the one person that understood them best. And that was palpable throughout the book.

Cable was OH SO YUM!!!! He had deep layers. And kept me guessing non-stop. I was a little in love with him myself. His personal struggles, and back-story, as well as his emotional connection to Affton tugged on my heartstrings. He was IT!!!! Honestly, I was fascinated, and had a HUGE crush on him.

This book was AMAZING!!!

As soon as my book budget allows I’ll be getting the paperback. RECOVERED is a reread kind of book, it checked all my boxes – a love story that was all kinds of perfect.

So, it’s with heartfelt honesty that I admit that I haven’t had much luck with Jay Crownover novels lately. Maybe because RECOVERED was a standalone, maybe because it was based on RL, maybe because it was gritty, raw and emotional. Authentic, unique and seriously realistic. I don’t know. All I know is that I found a keeper. A book to love, cherish and to add to my slowly expanding keeper bookshelf.

So, if you love a story that’s based on REAL LIFE. A story that was as touching as it was heart-wrenching. This is your book. I absolutely and unconditionally LOVED it!!!

BLURB

It was hate at first sight…

Affton

I hated Cable James McCaffrey.

He was entitled, spoiled, a user…and an addict.

He was out of control and didn’t bother trying to hide it.

He had everything anyone could want but still seemed miserable and lost.

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn’t stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can’t have the one thing you want more than anything else.

Cable

I was obsessed with Affton Reed.

She was rigid, uptight, and no fun. There was something about her innate goodness that called to me.

She acted like she was above all the normal faults and failures that clung to the rest of us like the scent of smoke after a fire.

I was infatuated with her, but that didn’t stop me from acting like she didn’t exist.

In the scorching heat of summer, Affton taught me that there is always a way back from the brink of despair. She showed me that the trick to having it all was realizing that it was already there, in my hands. All I had to do was hold onto it.

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

  1. Oh, I felt the same at the beginning of this book, but then the author said it had a hea and read it in a day. I loved it so much I think is one of the best of this year ❤
