CORINA’S REVIEW

I LOVED everything this book promised to be.

A young adult novel, with lots of high school drama and a hero that is being portrayed as a douchebag – which I love, no surprise there – makes it one intriguing read.

This book had so much potential.

I loved that Dashiell and Peggy grew up together as best friends. I loved that they were still best friends 18 years later. Moreover I loved that he didn’t care about any other girl the way he cared about her, and I especially loved his overly protective and possessive side. He also stayed true to himself by being a jerk and an asshole – to everyone, even to Peggy to an extent. I hate when characters change personalities midway through novels – and feel like author rarely go the distance. And bad boys almost never are “Bad Boys”. So, kudos to the author for sticking to it.

The couple’s connection was OMG heart fluttering awesome. It gave me these amazing FEELS. And I was blown away by some of the scenes between them – they were scorching hot and sensual – WOWZER!!

But what drove me nuts was the back and forth.

The emotional turmoil and volatile relationship between the couple became quickly an issue for me. I felt like I was walking a tightrope, holding on for dear life – it was exhausting. Every chapter was packed with tension and feelings that made this book the opposite of fluffy. It felt a bit much at times. One day they hated each other, the next they were best buds. I’m personally a pretty laid back person – the cold and hot, and high and low gave me whiplash.

The misunderstandings and hurt feelings on both sides because of thoughtlessness and hormonal decisions had me shaking my head continuously throughout the book. It’s hard to enjoy a book or even connect with characters that display such hotheaded and reckless decision making. I get it, it’s supposed to be YA and both characters are about 18 years old, but still.

But besides all that, I couldn’t put it down. And that says a LOT.

I was hooked. The writing, the characters, the story – it was one glorious mess and I couldn’t stop reading.

It could have easily been a 5 star for me since this is exactly what I love in a young adult novel. The reason why I can’t rate it higher is the constant hot and cold, it was tiring and became annoying, and in the end I couldn’t wait to be done with it. But I can see why readers will love it – it’s a gloriously and emotionally messed up love-story. And addictive above all else!
