I Want You Back – Lorelei James

If you love SECOND CHANCE and SINGLE PARENT romances – this book is for you.

I’m not a big fan of second chance romances because of the often used flashbacks, and not every author does them well. But even though I Want You Back had some, the author wrote them as memories and didn’t dedicate half of the book to it, which I appreciated. But what I really love is the single parent trope. And this book had a plethora of scenes of hilarious and typical kid situations that made me smile and chuckle.

There might be a couple events in this story that didn’t show Jaxson Lund in the best light. Especially his past behaviors as an athlete – when he was enjoying the peak of his career in the fullest without second thought or consideration towards his girlfriend. But I liked that Jax really tried to be the best kind of dad and possible future husband from the very beginning of the book. He was a wonderful father, even when he was struggling, and he tried his best to make amends on his quest of getting his family back.

Lucy, was a strong woman, hard working, and devoted to her child. The only issue I had was that she didn’t fight enough for what should have been hers. And that correlates with the way I felt about the Lund family, especially how they treaded Lucy in the past. It left a bit of a smudge on their otherwise charming personalities.

Jaxson and Lucy’s reunion wasn’t an instant lust/love kind of a deal. They took it slow, baby steps actually, and took the feelings of their daughter in account. The novel had many incredibly sweet encounters and touching scenes. And I can see how this book will please many readers.

For me, the story was a bit too busy, there were too many irons in the fire eschpeially in regards to Jaxson. And his family took a large amount of his attention away from his daughter and Lucy. I would have liked more one-on-one with both of them.

Even though I Want You Back is the first book in a new series, it’s still very much connected to the author’s Need You Series. Same family and siblings – and I would definitely recommend reading that series first.

Former NHL star Jaxson Lund has returned to the Twin Cities, but he’s at loose ends, unsure if he belongs at Lund Industries, or where he stands with Lucy, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his daughter, Mimi. Despite the signs she’d like to leave him in the penalty box, the attraction burning between them reinforces his determination to prove that he deserves a second chance…

Lucy Quade is in a good place with a steady job, a nice apartment, and a well-adjusted daughter, which is why she’s hesitant when Jax insists on co-parenting. It’s not that Lucy doesn’t trust Jax…she’s just unconvinced he can handle multiple responsibilities when he’s been singularly focused on playing hockey. But when issues arise with Mimi, Lucy’s shocked at how levelheaded and paternal he acts, giving her a glimpse of the Jax she used to know, the sexy, sweet man she fell for years ago.

Once Lucy lets her guard down, Jax goes all in to show her how good they are together, but will their past remain too large an obstacle to ever overcome?

  1. I have been waiting for someone else to read and review this book. It wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but I ended up liking it for the most part. I completely get what you’re saying about his family, etc. Nice review!

    1. Thank you and I’m glad I’m not alone with my thoughts. I’m going to check out your review next. Since I had no expectation at all, I’m curious to see what you were hoping for. Too bad it didn’t read its potential.
