From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.
Growing up, the three of us were friends.
He was the nerd.
I was the playboy.
She was the beauty.
Deep down, I only ever wanted her. I kept it inside because Rory and I made a pact that our friend, Amber, was off-limits.
I went off to college, and he got the girl.
Amber never knew how I felt.
They were together for years—before he broke her heart.
Through it all and across the miles, she and I casually stayed in touch.
When my job sent me to Boston for a three-month contract position, Amber let me stay in her spare room.
Still reeling from her breakup, she’d sworn off men.
One night, I opened her computer to find the shock of my life. She’d hesitantly contacted a male escort company. Afraid to date and get her heart broken again, she was looking for sex with no strings.
Every emotion imaginable ran through me: protectiveness, jealousy—curiosity.
Amber had chosen Gentleman Number Nine and sent him a message.
She opened up to him, confessing, among other things, her physical attraction to her friend— me. But she considered me off-limits—and she thought I was a manwhore. (Ironic, considering the circumstances.)
Eventually, she set up a date to meet Gentleman Nine at a hotel.
When she showed up several nights later to meet him, she got the surprise of her life to see me standing there—with an offer I hoped she wouldn’t refuse.
I should really start reading blurbs and reviews before diving into new books.
Sometimes the blindside works and others times it leaves me so stressed out.
Luckily, Gentleman Nine by Penelope Ward really worked for me. Although the angst and emotional turmoil of the trope was completely unexpected, I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
There was so much going on here. Best friends big brother, Emotional Loss, Family issues, Friends to Lovers, and a few other things. And I enjoyed it all!!
What I loved: The main characters have undeniable chemistry and a deep respect for one another. Their shared history makes the relationship more meaningful for me. The fact that they both wanted each other for so long, also played a huge part in why I really enjoyed it. Amber is probably one of my favorite heroines to date. She’s caring, sweet, and unbelievably selfless. I absolutely loved her!
The plot twist wasn’t very reasonable, but was beyond sweet on Rory’s part. As much as I didn’t like him initially, I grew to care for him. My heart broke for him.
The secondary characters and emotional issues the main characters are dealing with were so well done. I loved Channing’s relationship with his mother and Amber’s relationship with Milo was phenomenal.
And the Epilogue…
Oh and #GoGators!
Audiobook Review The rockstars of audiobook narration crushed it! They both deliver an amazing performance and it’s why they are both auto-buy narrators for me. I highly recommend this version!
