Captive Prince Series – C.S. Pacat

This is a review about the ENTIRE trilogy!!!

I’ve already read this series three times now, and I will continue reading it because there is not much that can top it.

Honestly to god – this trilogy ROCKED my pants off. I was floored by the storytelling, world building, slow burn, intense feelings, emotional turmoil, wit, manipulation, complexity, and character developing.

I’m a very picky reader. I have TWO series I read again and again, KATE DANIELS (annually) and GUILD HUNTER (every few years) – and now there is CAPTIVE PRINCE.

I still remember the first time I read these books. lI read them way to fast. lI swallowed them up. I churned through them to find out what would happen next and in the interim I didn’t savor the words, the feelings, anything. lI didn’t give it the time nor the dedication that it rightly deserved.

Now, every time I reread these books, I savor every single word. Every gesture, glance, and thought.

There were a few things that made this series spectacular, outstanding, phenomenal, epic:

First the world building.

If you seen Game of Thrones, or GOR – you get an inkling of how Captive Prince is build. It’s build on a very different world. Nothing should be compared to our world. There will be slave trade, rape, sexual exploits, and torture. This is a world of FANTASY!!! Where M/M is as normal and standard as M/F is for us. And slave trade a pillar of an entire civilization – as it had been in Ancient Rome approximately 2700 years ago (maybe not so very different after all).

The world building sucked me in. I never read a book that made my heart beat as crazy as this trilogy did. lI was literally sitting on the edge of my seat. I was sweating, I had butterflies in my stomach, and I was so fucking excited – it was quite ridiculous.

Secondly, the characters were UNBELIEVABLY addicting.

Damen and Prince Laurent were two characters that were phenomenally complex. Especially Laurent – that guy deserved an OSCAR!!! His thought process, always being steps ahead of everyone, had me holding my breath. I never knew what would happen next. And I never knew what kind of manipulations and machinations he had planned next. Thinking of how the author was able to bring it all together, and pull such strategy off – was mind boggling.

Damen, was how I imagined a Gladiator must have looked like. He was a fighting machine. Brute strength, fast feet, an expert of warfare and strategy, and a born leader. Damen was the polar opposite of Laurent, and still he was drawn to the arrogant prince.

I think, because they were polar opposites, their attraction and the slow burn was what made these books as epic as they were.

A few month after I finished the trilogy, I saw the author posting these pictures…

And I thought immediately – YES!!!! That’s 100% what I imagined the relationship between Laurent and Damen would look like.

Damen a gladiator type of soldier, strong, tall, domineering. And Damen, emotionally locked tight, cold, and in charge.

I was in love all over again.

Thirdly, the story on it’s own.

I was astonished and amazed by the uniqueness, and the absolute polarity to our own civilization. lI could see parts of the Roman Empire and Ancient Rome in Damen’s kingdom, but the rest was one of a kind. I can honestly say I  have NEVER read books like this trilogy before.

I would easily compare CS PACAT to Ilona Andrews, Brandon Sanderson, Jim Butcher, and Anne Bishop. She delivered a brilliant and epic story with outstanding world building, flawless writing, addicting characters, and the most complex and fascinating plot.

It must be clear by now, that this trilogy was beyond anything I ever read – it’s one of a kind and I can only recommend it to ANYONE that loves fantasy, is open minded, and interested in something unique.

Captive Prince

Damen is a warrior hero to his people, and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos. But when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative, and deadly, his new master, Prince Laurent, epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else…

Prince’s Gambit

The second volume in the Captive Prince trilogy.

With their countries on the brink of war, Damen and his new master Prince Laurent must exchange the intrigues of the palace for the sweeping might of the battlefield as they travel to the border to avert a lethal plot.

Forced to hide his identity, Damen finds himself increasingly drawn to the dangerous, charismatic Laurent. But as the fledgling trust between the two men deepens, the truth of secrets from both their pasts is poised to deal them the crowning death blow . . .

Kings Rising

Damianos of Akielos has returned.

His identity now revealed, Damen must face his master Prince Laurent as Damianos of Akielos, the man Laurent has sworn to kill.

On the brink of a momentous battle, the future of both their countries hangs in the balance. In the south, Kastor’s forces are massing. In the north, the Regent’s armies are mobilising for war. Damen’s only hope of reclaiming his throne is to fight together with Laurent against their usurpers.

Forced into an uneasy alliance the two princes journey deep into Akielos, where they face their most dangerous opposition yet. But even if the fragile trust they have built survives the revelation of Damen’s identity—can it stand against the Regents final, deadly play for the throne?
