On the day of her Presenting, in front of the entire Byern Court, seventeen-year-old Cyrene Strohm’s lifelong plans come to fruition when she’s chosen for one of the most prestigious positions in her homeland—an Affiliate to the Queen.
Or so she thinks.
When Cyrene receives a mysterious letter and an unreadable book, she finds nothing is as it seems. Thrust into a world of dangerous political intrigue and deadly magic, Cyrene’s position only grows more treacherous when she finds herself drawn to the one man she can never have…
King Edric himself.
Cyrene must decide if love is truly worth the price of freedom. Find out in this first book in USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde’s new Ascension series.
Cyrene Strohm is a Queen’s Affiliate, a high-ranking official of the court of Byern, with power and privilege to spare. But she’s also a keeper of dangerous secrets: like the fact that she holds the heart of the King, and that she possesses magic in a world where magic no longer exists.
Determined to discover what this means and how to use her newfound abilities, Cyrene sets off for the distant land of Eleysia. An island nation where Affiliates are strictly forbidden from entering.
But the journey is perilous, and the destination may mean utter ruin, as Cyrene comes to learn that everything she’s been told her whole life – about her court, her homeland, and even herself—are bound in a beautiful lie.
If you were to start with a little bit of The Selection, add in a smidge of ACOTAR, then sprinkle in a bit of The Golden Dynasty you’d have something that’s truly amazing! That’s kinda how this book reads! Don’t get me wrong, it’s completely fresh and unique. However, it feels like an amalgamation of everything I love about the YA genre with a hint of romance. I adored everything about it!
There’s a lot going on here. The story is multi-layered and unbelievably AMAZING! K.A. Linde totally owned me today! I couldn’t put it down. I literally sat on the sofa smiling to myself all day, while reading this amazing book. I looked like a crazy person, but didn’t care at all!
Here’s the skinny:
Cyrene Strohm is appointed to the position of Queen’s affiliate, a high-profile position in the royal court. After her appointment, she is thrown into the power struggle between the King, Queen, Prince, and Consort. She also captures the eye of the King and Prince early on, along with somehow becoming mixed up in a murder mystery.
Here’s what I loved:
The Affiliate is imaginative, exciting, thrilling, enigmatic, mysterious, and bloody brilliant! I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the ending. I cannot wait to continue with this series! I loved the characters, interpersonal dynamics, plot, writing, pace—pretty much everything about it.
Cyrene is smart, resourceful, determined, and cunning. She possesses all the traits I love in respect in a YA heroine. She’s a woman after my own heart.
The hint of paranormal was effing fabulous! I’m dying right now because I want to start the next book right now….sleep be damned.
To sum it up, the book is amazing. If you love YA; you’ll love this one. I highly recommend it.
My heart is broken and my stomach is in my throat! KA Linde just put me through an emotional workout. I don’t know what to do myself. Okay, that’s not totally true….I’m going to read The Consort ASAP! I’m dying to know how this series ends. It’s utterly enthralling!
Here’s the breakdown:
I don’t even know if I can sum this up articulately. So much happened in book 2. SO MUCH! Cyrene met new travel companions, found out magical creatures she thought were fairytales were actually real, found the two people she longed to find, and possibly found true love.
What I loved:
The action and adventure were thrilling. I love the quest Cyrene embarks upon. She’s brace and unwavering in her pursuit of answers. I loved her so much more in the installment. She really comes into her own. The character development is off the charts amazing.
The introduction of new threats and adversaries coupled with new allies! The new allies are particularly pleasant. Avoca is everything! The nature of her relationship with Cyrene is worth 5 stars alone. I loved everything about how their story has played out so far.
The romance isn’t over the top, but really hit the spot. I have no idea who I want Cyrene to end up with.
That ending through me into a tailspin of epic proportions.
Me, at the end the book:
I think I had things figured out, but alas….I know nothing. LOL
If you love epic, thrilling, positively brilliant YA reads AND WHO DOESN’T? You want to read this series!! It’s brilliant!
I’m off to read The Consort!
