Book Review & Blog Tour – THE TATTERED GLOVES by J.L. Berg

Head down.
Don’t look up.
Never make eye contact.

Those were the words I lived by growing up, the words that protected me in an unsafe home. But words are only letters and eventually even they couldn’t keep his hands off me.

Hoping to leave behind the shattered life of my past, I find myself in a boring, small town, with an aunt I’ve never met and at a school I loathe.

But soon I learn, not everything in this world is as black and white as I’ve determined. Sometimes those we are so quick to judge often need a second, third or even fourth time to make a first impression.

And often, there are friendships and even love waiting just around the corner, if we are brave enough to take the first step.

Am I brave? Or will I hide behind these tattered gloves of mine forever?

My first YA book of 2017 – YAY!!!

THE TATTERED GLOVES was my first book by J.L. Berg and I  – A B S O L U T E L Y – adored it.

I looked at the cover and already fell in love with it. The mittens were just too adorable.

And then I read the blurb….

Head down.
Don’t look up.
Never make eye contact.

Hello!!! Already intrigued.

And it just got better.

After a horrible and tragic event sixteen year old Willow Fairchild got sent off to live with her aunt. She suddenly found herself in a sleepy and cozy little town in Northern Virginia. The very opposite from the slums of D.C. where she lived with her mother the last sixteen years. .

She had no idea that her mom had a sister, let alone a twin sister. And was equally surprised about her mom’s twin as her aunt was by Willow’s existence. Her aunt was a godsend. Caring, nurturing and willing to be a family to Willow. All the things that she had missed out on her entire life.

Her aunt opened her house and heart and helped Willow adjust to her new surroundings. But not only her aunt was willing to go the extra mile for her also her soon to be best friend Allison. A very popular classmate that turned out to be exactly what Willow needed. A bubbly personality that accepted her exactly as she was.

And then there was Sam Shepherd – a tall, lanky, smooth-talking heartthrob. He was the part-time manager of his families book store and soon to be Willow’s boss. First impressions weren’t the best, and both had to overcome some animosity before they settled into a friendship that would turn Willows life around.

Sam, Allison and Addy (her aunt) would become a patchwork family for Willow. Those people allowed her to heal. To learn what family and love really was. Instead of trying to be invisible, she suddenly had people that accepted her the way she was.

Sam, was intrigued by her sad eyes and wanted to peel back her layers of protection. He saw her for what she was – brave and a fighter! And surprisingly they found many similarities in each other. I loved how very patient he was with her. Sam never pushed her, he just had the uttermost respect and faith in Willow to heal in her own time.

Allison found in Willow a sister, and best friend. They complimented each other in the best of ways. Their friendship was based on loyalty, Sam, and a case of “opposites attract”.

And Addy was what Willow needed the most. A mother figure that cared about her so deeply, that she would do anything in her power to give Willow all the wonderful experiences that she missed out on. And most of all a loving parent.

I truly LOVED this book.

It was one of those heart-felt and heart-warming books that left me with a warm glow. There was not much I didn’t like.

THE TATTERED GLOVES had the most amazing cast. All of them were genuinely good people. People that I would love to be around. JUST AMAZING!!!! Willow, Sam, Allison and Addy were the  heart and soul of this book.

The story pulled me in from the very first page. I didn’t need more history about Willows life in D.C., because I fell in love with the people of Sugar Tree, Virginia. Since the author didn’t go further into graphic details this book would be perfect for a YA audience. I thought the lack of graphic detail was appropriate and matched the overall voice of the story. In the end THE TATTERED GLOVES was a story that made me feel GOOD.
