Aurora Rising – Jay Kristoff Amie Kaufman

I was delighted when I got the notification that m hold at the library came in. Most of my audiobooks come directly from the library, but a popular book like Aurora Rising usually comes with a long wait time. I was surprised that the hold only took a month for it to go through.

This was my first book by this author duo. I tried to read Jay Kristoff’s Nevernight last year, but didn’t get far which was a bummer. It does’t help that I’m not a typical YA reader, I don’t get the doom and gloom, but I enjoy them now and then, especially as audiobooks, and when they are written by authors I enjoy. Moreover, most are pretty entertaining, including Aurora Rising.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.

The authors planned and executed the book very well. The cast was wonderfully diverse, and the book had more emotional depth than expected. Moreover not all of the twists were predictable. Although one popular twist has become very popular with YA writers – the killing of a main cast member. It starts to feel more formulaic than original. But I must say, I appreciated the how and when. It was a somewhat crucial part of the story, and made sense.

About the cast, I really enjoyed how distinctive everyone was. Not only in looks but also personalities, speech, and background. It’s become a successful aspect of YA books to have a diverse group of characters, best example Six of Crows. Not ever author can pull it off though, but I think these two authors did their research and planned accordingly.

Additionally the story was well paced and action filled. It’s the first book in a trilogy, and the overall arc just started. The crew will have to be ready for the next adventure, I just wonder if someone else is being cut. Nevertheless I really enjoyed the plot, it was unique, engaging and never boring. And the way the story was put together, with short intervals of excerpts and computer data, really underscored the overall feel of otherness. In a good way.

The audiobook was very well done.

Not only was it performed by a full cast, it also had special effects that added another layer of experience to an otherwise already engaging performance. I appreciate and I’m always grateful for the length publishers and authors go to make an audiobook a memorable experience.

So, even for someone that doesn’t read YA often, this book was a success!

Aurora Rising – Jay Kristoff Amie Kaufman

Aurora Rising - Jay Kristoff Amie KaufmanThe year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.
