Ten books that feature book boyfriend worthy characters…
HUGE thanks to The Broke and the Bookish for this meme.
This week is all about book boyfriends.
I decided instead of posting the blurb I decided to post excerpts of scenes that tell a little about the male character. I hope some of these excerpts makes you want to pick up one of these books.
(Kate Daniels #1)
I still remember the first time I picked up Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews, I was NOT entirely certain how I felt, but what I knew immediately was that I NEEDED to know more about Curran Lennart. He was the Beast Lord and the first scene between him and Kate captivated my imagination like none other.
Diplomacy was never my strong suit and my patience had run dry. I crouched and called out, “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty.”
Two golden eyes ignited at the opposite wall. A shape stirred within the darkness and rose, carrying the eyes up and up and up until they towered above me. A single enormous paw moved into the moonlight, disturbing the dust on the filthy floor. Wicked claws shot forth and withdrew. A massive shoulder followed, its gray fur marked by faint smoky stripes. The huge body shifted forward, coming at me, and I lost my balance and fell on my ass into the dirt.
Dear God, this wasn’t just a lion. This thing had to be at least five feet at the shoulder. And why was it striped? The colossal cat circled me, half in the light, half in the shadow, the dark mane trembling as he moved. I scrambled to my feet and almost bumped into the gray muzzle. We looked at each other, the lion and I, our gazes level. Then I twisted around and began dusting off my jeans in a most undignified manner. The lion vanished into a dark corner. A whisper of power pulsed through the ro
om, tugging at my senses. If I did not know better, I would say that he had just changed. “Kitty, kitty?” asked a level male voice. I jumped. No shapechanger went from a beast into a human without a nap. Into a midform, yes, but beast-men had trouble talking. “Yeah,” I said. “You’ve caught me unprepared. Next time I’ll bring cream and catnip toys.” “If there is a next time.”
Ever since I’ve been a faithful follower and Kate and Curran have been my most favorite couple EVER. There is nothing that compared to Illona Andrews writing, witty dialogues, and just hilarious situations they put their characters in. I lost count the times I laughed tears and reread scenes to be sure I read correctly. I’ve been in love with this UF series for almost 10 years now.
It’s the one series I’ll read again, and again. My annual ritual is to reread the entire series in preparation for the newest release. I can’t imagine a life without Kate and Curran and I’m incredibly grateful that I found them.
Kiss the Sky
(Calloway Sisters #1)
I started out with the Calloway Sisters series first, I know that’s like starting in the middle, but it worked for me, because I met my favorite couple right then and there. When I met Connor he already was Rose’s boyfriend. And from the very first moment I was intrigued.
I’m attracted to people.
To the words they speak, to the actions they take, to their full-bodied mannerisms and soulful gaits. I am attracted to people. To impassioned hearts that beat out of sync, the ones that skip a measure, heard in hushed places and violent spaces—I am attracted to people.
There is no other truth I can yell as loud as this one. And it won’t help. They’ll want a label to understand me, and I’ve never truly defined myself with any.
Nothing will fix this but a lie.
It’s not a lie to one person, which is easier to swallow. It’s a declaration to millions of people. It’s condemning a belief that I’ve lived by, one that makes me me.
Hands down he is so smartest fictional character I’ve ever met. He’s always ten steps ahead. He understands everyone on a scarily deeply level, and the only one that can go toe to toe with him is Rose.
I’ve been truly infatuated with him ever since I laid eyes on him. His unique brand of smarts and intellect is a turn on and his bone deep loyalty to his friends/family is extremely appealing to me. He is in one word the WHOLE ENCHILADA!!!!
My DREAM man!!!
Worth the Fall
(The McKinney Brothers #1)
There is something extremely sexy about a guy that is amazing with kids. In Worth the Fall I fell in love with Matt McKinney and never looked back.
For me, this book was as close to perfection as I’ve ever gotten.
Matt fell in love with a highly pregnant woman who already had four kids. FOUR!!!!! And a fifth’s on the way. Matt was a dream come true – honestly for any single mom out there there should be a Matt. I was glowing and smiling and just the happiest I could have been while reading this book. It was truly the most heart-warming story of all times.
It wasn’t his usual MO to share details about anything, especially women, but he wouldn’t deny what she was to him, what the kids were. And with that thought, the words just spilled out.
“Her name is Abby. She’s sweet and smart and funny.” With eyes that dance and sparkle when she laughs. “Jack is five and can’t catch a football to save his life, but we’re working on it. Gracie’s three. She’s got curls and dimples and can talk me into just about anything.” Even dressing up like a princess.
The more he talked, the harder it was to control the smile spreading across his face. “Charlie is two and a half and sticks to me like a tick. Annie’s almost seven and most of the time I’m not sure she likes me.”
Matt truly stole my heart, and I don’t even want it back. I read this book at least once a year, whenever I’m in a reading slump I’ll pick it up – as I’m doing tomorrow, because just talking about this book makes me want to start reading right NOW!!!!
Fallen Crest High
(Fallen Crest High #1)
Mason Kade was an asshole when I met him in Fallen Crest High. Privileged, cocky, self-assured. Popular, controlling, and leading the pack wherever he went. Nothing really changed except that he found love and his way of keeping it was SEXY as hell.
But even though there was more drama in FCH than pages, his enduring love for Sam was unshakable and that’s why he is one of my most favorite book boyfriends.
Throughout the years, his bond with Sam was a beacon of hope, everlasting love, maturity, loyalty, and faith. He impressed the heck out of me. I never thought that out of the drama that FCH was famous for would emerge a character that was as steadfast as a mountain. He was SOLID, dependable, Sam’s ROCK at all times and my favorite.
You protect. You take care. You shield those you love. Yes, you’re ruthless. Yes, you go to lengths others don’t, but you do it so that no one—and I mean, no one—can hurt you or even try to hurt you. That’s why you do what you do. That’s why you’re who you are and why you’re loved by me and wanted by so many others. That’s why you’re respected. You protect and you love and you don’t let anyone take that away from you.”
For me, Mason Kade will always be my #1 Tijan character and one half of an amazing couple that is hard to top. Tijan wrote a masterpiece and Mason, Sam (and Logan) are her crown jewels.
I fell hard when I read Something so Perfect – I loved Matthew Grant the sexy caveman. I absolutely adored his heavy handedness. His straightforwardness. His possessiveness. It all spoke to me on a very basic level – he turned me on!!!
Usually I’m not someone that likes to be manhandled, but I would defiantly make an exception for Matthew. He could manhandle however he wanted. 😀
“Where is Karrie?” my mom asks, so I turn around, assuming she is right behind me, but I can’t see her till I spot her a couple of feet back talking to a guy with more grease in his hair than Danny Zuko. He’s kissing her fucking hand and laughing with her. I knew that dress would fucking kill me.
I walk up to them, not even smiling. Instead, I grab her hand that’s at her side, pulling her away from him.
Right before I get to Mom and Cooper, she pulls me to a stop. “Seriously, you need to stop that. He was just saying hello.”
I walk over to her smiling, pushing the hair off her shoulder to lean in and whisper in her ear, “If you continue, I’m going to take you into the bathroom and fuck you so hard, this whole club will hear.” Then I lean down and kiss her. I’m so fed up of fucking hiding everything. I don’t give a shit who snaps a picture. I’m done. I finally let her go. “You get me?” I finish while she nods at me.
Give me a Matthew any day and I would be a very happy gal.
Hawke has been my favorite from the very begging. It was always just Hawke. Maybe because of his animal so close to the surface, or maybe because the build up was so intense. He denied himself Sienna since the very first moment they met. She was too young and he wouldn’t go there, but his wolf and especially Sienna had different plans.
And I was hooked!!!
Hawke, was everything a leader of a shifter pack should be. Domineering, that a glance alone was enough to silence anyone that dared to cross him after a meeting with Sienna. His wolf already accepted his mate, it was just Hawke that was slow on the uptake – which was so not him. But Sienna was the only one that could make him loose his control.
As seen in one of my most favorite scenes.
Maria, Cadie, and the rest were out front, cheering.
Who was dancing on the bar.
In fuck-you boots and a shirt that barely contained her breasts.
Eyes going wolf, Hawke began to stride through the crowd. A few aggressive young males turned to give him a talking-to . . . and froze, their gazes jerking away when they met the dominance in his own. Even the humans understood, going pale as they moved out of his path as fast as possible.
He realized part of the reason for José’s call when he saw the human men lined up along the bar, all of them with a look in their eye that said they’d spill blood to possess the woman who danced with such wild, sensual grace. The SnowDancer males would, of course, have defended her with fists and claws the instant anyone tried to touch her.
And José’s bar would’ve been trashed in minutes.
Then there were the leopard and wolf males giving each other dirty looks as interpack flirting took place. Riordan was being watched by at least three cats with violence on their minds, while Lake and Amos were currently glaring with intent at Ebony’s dance partner.
The entire thing had the makings of a clusterfuck.
Shoving away the humans at the bar with rough hands, he reached out and gripped one leather-covered ankle.
Sienna stopped moving.
“Down,” he growled, meeting brown eyes so much less extraordinary than the truth of her cardinal gaze. “Now.”
Music still pumped but the bar had gone silent. Sienna didn’t immediately obey, and that just infuriated the wolf. “Last warning, baby.”
Holding his gaze, Sienna said, “I’m not breaking any of the Pack rules.”
Every single person in the bar sucked in a breath.
Hawke didn’t pay them any attention. He’d had enough. A single, precisely timed tug and he tilted her off balance. As she fell, he caught her, throwing her over his shoulder. “Out!” he ordered the other wolves as he left.
Sienna, having apparently recovered from the loss of breath caused by his sudden move, began to wiggle and twist. “Let me go!”
He tapped her behind, a short, sharp shock that had her freezing. “Don’t make me any more pissed than I am right now.” “Bully.” It was muttered under her breath, but he heard it.
I’ve read dozens of shifter books and none other than Hawke made it to my favorite characters. He was the ultimate pack leader and everything an alpha should be. My #1!!!
(Surviving Raine #1)
I think I couldn’t have picked a more depraved and foul mouthed book boyfriend with Sebastian Stark. He was everything a book boyfriend should not be, but on the other hand he was the most logical choice. He saved the day!!!
If you were stranded on a life raft you would want Sebastian to be there. Alone on an island? All you need is Sebastian. He was a survival expert additional to a raving lunatic, an alcoholic, a whoremonger, and sex fiend – and all together he was just about perfect.;D
“Why don’t you lie down?” I asked.
“I’m not tired.”
“What does that have to do with it?”
“Don’t say that word!” Raine cringed.
“What, c**t?” I laughed. “Why not?”
“So am I,” I reminded her.”
“I don’t understand this,” I said softly. “I wanted to fuck you that first night on the raft, but that was just because I wanted to get off and you were there. I still want to fuck you, but the reasons are all different. I’ve never felt like this after sleeping with someone…or during it…shit. This didn’t feel like I was fucking you…it was something else. I don’t know what it is. I want to be with you, and touch you, and hold you. I have this overwhelming desire to protect you and make sure you’re safe. Every time I look at you, it’s like my chest gets crushed, and I just want to stare at you and hold on to you and tell you everything is going to be all right. I don’t know what this is, Raine. I don’t understand what you’re doing to me.”
I felt her fingers against my jaw and glanced down into her opened eyes. Fuck. She hadn’t been asleep after all. Her mouth turned up into a beautiful smile, and her response ended me.
I love you too, Bastian.”
I loved him dearly, and I go back and read Surviving Raine again and again, just to get a dose of an asshole and jerk, that became putty in his woman’s hands. I love when that happens. But even more so, if those jerks stay true to themselves without giving up their personality. Sebastian would always be Sebastian, and that’s why I love him.
I have very specific tastes and it takes a lot to be classified as my Book Boyfriend. I adore commanding alphas who love to talk dirty. My heroes are also typically damaged in some way and therefore don’t act or react as we’d typically think of as normal. I’m drawn to darker, commanding, over the top alphas. Nothing gets me hotter than a man who knows what he wants and stops at nothing to get it, especially if what he wants is hot, dirty sex! My main alpha love is Hudson Pierce from Laurelin Paige’s Fixed Series.
I cut him off. “And you ‘hired’ me and seduced me. And when I told you I needed to not have sex with you, you somehow got me to do exactly that. You are manipulative. You’re a bully, Hudson.” I wrapped my arms around myself, hoping to stop the new onslaught of tears that threatened.
“No, Alayna. I didn’t want that with you.” The anguish in his tone set my tears into motion. He leaned forward and I sensed he wanted to touch me. Instead, he put his hand on the seat next to me, putting himself as close to me as I’d let him. “I don’t want to be like that with you.”
I swiped at the tears, unable to keep up with their pace. “Then what do you want to be with me, Hudson?”
“Honestly? I’m not sure.” He sat back against the seat. His expression confused, torn.
Suddenly, he looked much younger than I’d ever seen him. He no longer seemed the confident, commanding alpha male that I knew him to be, but like a group member in one of my therapy sessions, exposed and accessible.
He let out a brief laugh, as if he recognized his own vulnerability and it amused him or confounded him. “I’m drawn to you, Alayna. Not because I want to hurt you or make you feel a certain way, but because you’re beautiful and sexy and smart and, yes, a little crazy, maybe, but you’re not broken. And that makes me hopeful. For me.”
This series was actually my gateway into romance and erotica. Hudson and Laynie’s story left such a great impression, but it was really mostly Hudson. He’s described as “the most breathtaking man on the planet.” He has chiseled cheek-bones, a strong jaw, perfect floppy brown hair, and the most intense gray eyes ever. He’s a businessman who doesn’t think he’s capable of love, but that doesn’t stop him from pursuing Laynie. Throughout the series, he’s giving, but also aloof. He supports her unequivocally and has a protective and possessive streak a mile wide. He’s sheer perfection.
(The Phoenix Pack #1)
Another very dear book boyfriend of mine is Trey from Suzanne Wright’s Feral Sins. Trey takes alpha-male to the next level. And that’s not just because he the alpha-wolf of his pack, but he’s so very possessive and protective of his mate.
Trey is described as a homicidal nutcase, but seriously hot. He has arctic blue eyes, a harsh scowl, ripped muscles, and a hard penetrating stare. He’s also described as having a hungry look and actually turns feral during battle in his wolf form. OMG! I’m getting hot just thinking about it!
This was why she deserved a better mate –he was so damn wrong for her it wasn’t even funny. Still, she was staying exactly where she was. “You’re all there is for me, Taryn. I’m broken, baby. You know that. Before you… it was like those bits of me were just scattered all over the place. I’ve never felt whole. Not until you. You hold those pieces together. It’s not an exaggeration when I say you hold my sanity in your hands. Without you, I’d fall apart.” If that made any sense to her, he’d be surprised.
She stroked his bottom lip with the pad of her thumb. “Thank you for that. Now do me already.”
He sighed dramatically. “I’m mated to a nympho.”
What I love most of Trey is his fierce protectiveness of not only his mate, but his entire pack. He hard and tough, but will literally die for his pack. It just doesn’t get much better than for me.
Kanetus E’Var is not your regular book boyfriend. Honestly, staying away from him would be smarter and safer. But he is my reason why i’m reading this book again and again.
He is evil. Mean. The worst kind of alien. An abductor, a drug lord, and someone that sees humans as a means to and end. But I LOVE him!!!
I don’t think the author ever meant for him to be someones #1 but for me he was so much more than meets the eyes.
He moved over her, pressing his mouth right against her ear, and breathed, “I don’t like you, human.” His hand rubbed slowly, deliciously, at her below. The muscles of his arm flexed and uncoiled as he moved, exactly in time with the rise and fall of his breath. “And I don’t trust you. I don’t want you here and I know my Raven doesn’t want you here, either. But this, now, this is interesting.”
“You said something the other day.” Kane pillowed his head with one arm and let the other rest on his stomach, seemingly relaxed and unconcerned with her as he watched Raven write. “You said you’d been a bitch longer than my Raven. You knew how to do it better. That’s not a use for that word that I’m familiar with, but I think I take your meaning. We have a word for that, too. Thal. I think of you as my thal… when I don’t think of you as my ichuta’a.” He smiled thinly and moved his eyes to her. They were utterly without humor. Sue-Eye resisted the urge to shift. She held his gaze and waited. “Do you know what I can do with thalan?” he asked. “Anything you want,” she said. “That’s right. I can feed them. I can eat them. I can fix them. I can break them. I can do anything I want.” His voice never raised. His words remained calm and evenly modulated. His black-fathomed gaze never dimmed.
So, yeah – he is not traditional. Not human, not someone you would ever want to meet in the dark, but he stayed with me and he is the reason why I’ve read HEAT already a dozen times.
So, Kane was my last book boyfriend for today. I really had fun with this post, and I’m going to reread a few of these books just to catch up with my favorite fictional book boyfriends.
