Things in Whynot, NC have gone to the dogs, and that’s just the way the town’s only veterinarian, Laken Mancinkus, likes it. No matter if she’s up when the rooster crows, or working until the cows come home, Laken never leaves an animal in need. So when a gorgeous Yankee comes begging for help herding some wily goats, Laken is up to the task.
Jake McDaniel is looking for a tax break, and what better way than to take up…farming? This ex-football player turned businessman turned unwitting goat farmer is up to his knees in goat drama. Runaway goats, dehydrated goats, and a baby goat that wants no one other than him, Jake needs more help than he cares to admit. Good thing the sexy veterinarian is right there to coach him on how to be a farmer. The only problem is, Laken’s not looking for anything more than a good time, while Jake is looking for his forever girl.
Will the baby goat, and Laken, be enough to get Jake to stay? Or will he take his tax break and hoof it back to Chicago? One thing is for certain…what happens on the farm doesn’t always stay on the farm.
If you find an author that makes you happy when reading her books – keep on reading.
That’s exactly what I’ve been doing with Juliette Poe. I fell in love with her debut novel Ain’t He Precious? and never looked back.
Her books are essentially romances that are sweet, feel-good, funny and utterly enjoyable. Every single book of hers, has been a HIT with me. I love her characters and the town of Whynot charmed the pants off me.
In Barking Up the Wrong Tree Laken Mancinkus is the woman to keep an eye on. She is utterly comfortable in her skin, self assured, and not really looking for a relationship with Jake McDaniel. But from the very first moment they laid eyes on each other, there was something special in the air. Her professionalism and her no-nonsense attitude left a lasting impression on Jake. A healthy dose of attraction and an enjoyable night later and all bets were off.
What I absolutely loved about Jake and Laken was their openness and willingness to enjoy each other without putting any labels on whatever it was they were doing. This attitude is so rare in romances nowadays. The wish to just see how things evolved without putting pressure on each other. I absolutely adored that.
And Jake and Laken couldn’t have been more perfect for each other. They enjoyed the same luxuries in life. Even though she was a country girl and he a city boy, they weren’t that different from each other which became more obvious to them with every day they spent together.
Jake truly impressed me with his down-to-earth demeanor and his readiness to get dirty when needed. He was utterly charming with his baby goat – ♡♡♡. The more I read about him, the more attractive he became – and he already was a very likable character from the very first chapter, so imagine him becoming even more awesome with the book progressing. SWOON!!!
Laken on the other hand was one of those female characters that had a tough outer shell, and a feisty and can-do demeanor, but when the layers were peeled it was blatantly obvious that she hid an insecurity that left a big hole in her heart. I found her refreshingly candid and incredibly appealing. She was my kind of woman!!!!
Another reason why I love Juliette Poe’s books as much as I do is because of the additional POV’s she tends to add to her stories. I love hearing the granddad’s thoughts, and this time we got “Herman” as well. ADORABLE!!!!!! I can’t say it enough, her books make me fabulously happy. Whenever I start a new book by her I have a HUGE smile on my face.
If you love small town folks, down-to-earth characters with charm and sass, and family values that mean something – Juliette Poe is your author.
