CORINA’S REVIEW

When I read the blurb of Beautiful Lawman (Devil’s Rock #4) by Sophie Jordan I knew I had to read it. The lawman and The trouble maker  – it honestly couldn’t have been any better than this. I adore enemies to lovers romances. On top of that he was the law and she the waitress/stripper with a sassy mouth and a big chip on her shoulder.

I was in HEAVEN!!! BLISS!

I had a blast reading Beautiful Lawman. This novel checked all my boxes – ALL OF THEM!!!   Not only was the story well crafted and smoothly written, it also had two characters that were a match made in heaven.

The sexual tension was deliciously vibrant. It literally jumped off the pages whenever Piper and Hale met. It sizzled and steamed up the air. Hale’s straightlaced and controlled demeanor was the opposite of Piper’s get-it-done personality. Which lead to some epic clashes that left both parties singed and hot and bothered.

Piper’s resilience, grit, and determination as well as her tough outer shell was a beacon that Hale could not resist. Her bone deep loyalty and love for her family guided her in every decision she made. Even if it was the last thing she wanted to do – she did anything and everything to make sure her family was taken care of. A strong female that could weather any storm but who longed for a better life for herself and her family. When she met Hale, she had no idea that some things were just meant to happen.

Hale had heard and seen it all. But he still wasn’t prepared for someone like Piper. He did his very best to respect his professional boundaries and keep his attraction buried and subdued. As the head of their small town law enforcement agency he knew what kind of trouble Piper Walsh would bring to his door. But just one look from Piper was enough to make him forget everything else he ever thought about her and give in to his urges.

This book worked for me on more than one level.

The enemies to lovers trope was fantastically done. Piper’s strong feelings towards all things law enforcement added a layer of contempt and tension to an already explosive relationship. Her feelings were genuine and palpable. And her slow but unstoppable change towards Hale a true pleasure to witness.

I also adored the struggle that both main characters went through. It felt real and raw, and at times it was heart achingly sobering. The author really didn’t hold any punches and the end result was addicting and all consuming.

And it makes me want to read the rest of the series stat. After reading her YA series (The Ivy Chronicles), which I adored, jumping on this contemporary series was no hardship at all. And Beautiful Lawman felt more like a standalone, with some ties to former books, but not like a book that needed to be read in order.

For my next book I’m thinking of picking up Fury on Fire (Devil’s Rock #3). North Callaghan and Faith Walters (Hale’s sister) had minor roles in Beautiful Lawman, and the combination of convict and a white picket fence kind of girl sounds just like the right kind of couple for me.:D

Beautiful Lawman – Sophie Jordan

BLURB

From the wrong side of the tracks and with most of her family in jail or dead, Piper Walsh is used to everyone in town thinking the worst about her. It doesn’t seem to matter that she’s worked hard to build a good life for herself. So she isn’t surprised that when she comes into contact with Sweet Hill’s wildly irresistible, arrogant sheriff, Hale Walters, they’re instant adversaries. Piper has nothing in common with the town golden-boy-turned-lawman—and she refuses to be a notch on his bedpost.

Despite rumors, Hale avoids fooling around with the women of Sweet Hill, many of whom are hoping to get him to the altar. But staying out of Piper’s path is proving near impossible. The infuriating troublemaker clearly has no respect for his badge. As she continues to push his buttons, it becomes clear to Hale that he must either arrest Piper—or claim her as his own.

GOODREADS

Sophie Jordan took her adolescent daydreaming one step further and penned her first historical romance in the back of her high school Spanish class. This passion led her to pursue a degree in English and History.

A brief stint in law school taught her that case law was not nearly as interesting as literature – teaching English seemed the natural recourse. After several years teaching high school students to love Antigone, Sophie resigned with the birth of her first child and decided it was time to pursue the long-held dream of writing.

In less than three years, her first book, Once Upon A Wedding Night, a 2006 Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Nominee for Best First Historical, hit book shelves. Her second novel, Too Wicked To Tame, released in March 2007 with a bang, landing on the USA Today Bestseller’s List.

  1. Such a great review you have here!! I adored Hale and Piper as well and their interactions were so fabulous. The tension between them was so well written. And the whole lawman and troublemaker mix totally worked for this book.

    thanks for sharing.
